She received a Masters of Science in Education from Penn State and taught for nearly 35 years in the Bellefonte and Bald Eagle Area Public School Systems, also the Alliance Christian School; inspiring hundreds of young students and teachers.
Since 1992, Bellefonte was home to Cheryl and her husband of 32 years, Paul DeCusati, and she became very active in community events, including Victorian Christmas, the Milesburg Car Show, and Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association. She enthusiastically helped give tours of Bellefonte’s Victorian houses and enjoyed refurbishing and decorating her own Victorian home on Curtin Street. Recently, she was an active volunteer at Centre Crest Nursing Home.
Cheryl was a joyous Christian and an active member of Park Forest Baptist Church in State College, where she taught Sunday School and was involved in many of the children’s events. She will not only be remembered for her faith, but the love that she had for teaching and for her students and the lives that she touched. Cheryl took each child’s hand, in hopes of opening their mind, but ended up touching their hearts. The memories and love and learning that she instilled in all of her “kids” will forever be treasured.
Cheryl was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1958 and was raised in a loving farm family in Brownsville, PA. This childhood framed her values and view of the world, and she was always proud of her early life there. Her parents were the late Wayne Dils and Mary Lou (Lutes) Porter.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her older brother Wayne D. Porter Jr. and wife Susan, children Willson, Melissa, Wesley and Emily; brother Charles E. Porter and wife Patricia, children Stephanie (Ken) Hahn and Matthew (Katie) Porter; and eight great-nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 10am – 12 noon at Park Forest Baptist Church at 3030 Carnegie Drive, State College. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at noon at the church with Pastor Jeremy Field officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Cheryl’s memory to Park Forest Baptist Church – Children’s Ministry at 3030 Carnegie Drive, State College, PA 16803.
