Ross Henry Hoy, 92, of Bellefonte, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 6, 2018. Born on April 3, 1926, in Blanchard, he was the son of the late John H. and Myrtle Josephine (Bolopue) Hoy. On October 11, 1951 he married his beloved wife, Mae Louise (Rickard) Hoy, who preceded him in death on April 10, 2007 after sharing 55 years of marriage together.
Ross was a 1944 graduate of Lock Haven High School. After high school he enlisted and served in the United States Navy during WWII from 1944-1946. He worked for Marblehead Lime Company (Standard Lime) for 37 years until he retired in 1988 as the plant manager.
Ross is survived by one son, Larry Hoy of Bellefonte, and two daughters, Anne Gaddis (Page) of Spring Mills, and Nancy Rush (Dwayne) of State College; seven grandchildren, Audrey Gaddis, Rachel Gaddis, and Preston Gaddis, Andrew Campolongo (Magda), Alex Campolongo, and Caitlin Rush, and Ross C. Hoy. Also surviving is one brother, Lewis (Jo), along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by six brothers, Stanford, Bruce, Robert “Jack”, Kenneth, Samuel and Fred, and seven sisters, Helen Powers, Beatrice Stover, Shirley Dietz, Marilla Englert, Annette Freeze, Ruth Crissman and Virginia Lewicki.
Ross enjoyed woodworking, traveling, collecting salt dips and coins. He was an avid poker player and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Ross was a life member of the BPOE Elks No. 182 in Lock Haven, Bellefonte VFW Post #1600, and the American Legion Post # 867 in Pleasant Gap, where he was a past commander. Additionally, he was a 50-year member of the Bellefonte Masonic Lodge No. 268, Scottish Rite – Valley of Altoona, Bellefonte Chapter No. 241, and a member of the Legion of Honor Unit of the Jaffa Shrine-Altoona and Centre County Shrine Club, where he was a past president.
There will be public viewings held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with a Masonic Service beginning at 7:45pm at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. at 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte. An additional viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 from 10-11am at the funeral home. Funeral services will follow at 11am at the funeral home with Mrs. Donna Rae Batschelet, ALWL officiating. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow at Dunnstown Cemetery in Lock Haven.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ross’s memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children 1645 W. 8th Street Erie, PA 16505 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
