Betty L. McDonnell, 88, passed away on Sunday January 7, 2018 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center. Born March 16, 1929 in Bellefonte, she was the daughter of the late John G. Larimer and Flora M. Larimer. On May 29, 1954 she married Joseph J. McDonnell Jr. Joe preceded Betty in death on November 9, 1998.
Betty was deeply committed to her family and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. She would frequently travel to attend various events for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the joy of her life.
Her family is filled with sorrow in the passing of Betty or Mother or Ding. Surviving are her two children: daughter, Amy Johnson and her husband Barry Johnson, Jr; son, Lee McDonnell and his wife Denise Verchimak; five grand-children, Joe (and wife Megan), Jacey (and wife Emily), Alaina, Adam and Carli and two great grand-children, Evelyn and Kade.
Betty was a 1947 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School. Recently she served as class secretary and treasurer and played an important role in organizing their class luncheons. Her work career began with Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator which she chose to stop so she could be a full-time mother and homemaker. Once the children were older, she worked in the cafeteria at the Centre County Vo Tech school and later transferred to Supelco where she retired.
She actively served her church, Faith United Methodist Church, in numerous capacities, helping to prepare communion, assisting with funeral dinners, volunteering at the Faith Center and preparing meals for the Soup Kitchen. She served as Sunday School Class Treasurer. As a member of the United Methodist Women, she received the Special Mission Recognition Award. In her retirement, she volunteered at Centre Crest in the Beauty Shop and assisted with events sponsored by the Auxiliary. She worked part time at the Plumb’s Card and Gift.
A visitation will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 512 Hughes Street Bellefonte, on Saturday January 13, 2018 from 10 am until 12 pm. Funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation at Faith United Methodist Church at 12 pm with Reverend Andrew Morgan officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Centre-Crest-Volunteer-Auxiliary, 502 E.
