Obituary for Basil Ray

Basil M. Ray, 81, of Bellefonte, passed away on May 5, 2017 at Centre Crest Nursing Home after a short battle with cancer. Born September 25, 1935, he was the son of the late Donald P. and Margaret (Woomer) Ray. On August 18, 1957, he married Nancy J. (Cowher) Ray who survives him. He and Nancy celebrated 59 years of marriage in August 2016.
Basil was a 1954 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School and went on to graduate from Williamsport Area Community College in 1956. In 1956, he joined Titan/Cerro as an engineer. He spent most of his time at Cerro in the tool and die department where he retired in 2000 after 44 years.
He is also survived by 2 children, Brian D. (Tanga Dawes) Ray of Cheyenne, WY and Stefanie D. (Brian) Lewis of Bellefonte, three grandchildren; Ashley Morelli (Pete), Austin Lewis (Kendra Yearick), Andrew Lewis (Casey Pursel); 8 great-grandchildren; Bridyn Lewis, Emma Pyle-Lewis, Ian Kontier, Caleb Morelli, Gabriella Morelli, Isaac Lewis, Olivia Lewis, and Adalyn Lewis; two grand dogs, Razzle and Dakota, and two grand bunnies, Mocha and Binky.
He was a lifetime member of Undine Fire Company, UAW 1282, IOOF, member and secretary of Cerro Monday Morning Bowling League, Superintendent of Axemann Methodist (New Hope United Methodist Church) Sunday School and Sunday School Teacher, bass singer of two gospel quartets: Spirit Tones and Gospel Tones. Basil enjoyed gardening, double-sided jigsaw puzzles, NASCAR (Jeff Gordon/Danica Patrick), NCAA March Madness, Penguins, the Colts (Jonny U and Peyton Manning), Lionel Trains, hunting, family gatherings and dining out, specifically at “The Second Cup” in Lock Haven. He especially enjoyed his Chevy Impala SS.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Loren R. Ray on April 4, 2010.
There will be a public viewing held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 from 6-8pm at Wetzler Funeral Service Inc. at 206 N. Spring Street Bellefonte and also Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 10-11am at New Hope United Methodist Church at 1089 E. College Avenue Bellefonte.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 11am at New Hope United Methodist Church at 1089 E. College Avenue Bellefonte with Pastor Bob Dornan officiating. Burial will be private at convenience of the family.
