Obituary for Leroy Eckley


Leroy B. Eckley, 82, of Bellefonte, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017 after a brief stay at Centre Crest Nursing Facility . Born on February 19, 1935 in Valley View, PA, he was the son of the late Paul N. and Ethel (King) Eckley. He is survived by his longtime girlfriend Suzanne Askey, of Hawk Run.
Leroy attended the one -room school house in Valley View and often talked about the memories and opportunities provided. He later graduated from the Bellefonte High School. For over twenty years, he worked at Sutton Engineering in Bellefonte and later ARL at Penn State, a draftsman at each. In his younger years, he enjoyed spelunking, canoeing, and hiking. His lifetime interests included woodworking, hunting, fishing, going to camp with friends and being outdoors. Much of his free-time was spent with Suzanne going out-to-eat, socializing, weekending at the Cross Fork's fishing trailer, gambling, and vacationing at the beach.
He is survived by two daughters: Beth Phillips (Terry) of Valley View, Susan Eckley (Rick Breon) of Valley View, and one brother, Malcom “Mack” Eckley of Phoenix, AZ. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Kyle Phillips, Elijah and Jacob Breon, brother-in-law, Leon “Dick” Blair of Valley View, numerous nieces, nephews, as well as former wife, Donna Eckley of Unionville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Julia “Judy” Marshall, Miriam “Peg” Blair, one brother, Wayne Eckley, and his beloved grandson, Kaeleb Phillips.
Friends will be received on Friday, April 7, 2017 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte. Funeral services will immediately follow visitation at 11:00 am with Reverend James Schomer officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
