Eric Markel

Eric Markel was born in Claysburg, PA on March 20, 1978.  Growing up as a Tiger Cub and progressing to a Boy Scout he received The Scout’s highest honor, his Eagle Badge.  Upon graduating from Bellefonte High School in 1996 he attended Penn State University at University Park, Pennsylvania.  He graduated in 2000 as the Student Marshall of the Eberly College of Science.  After graduation from the University he worked for Merck Pharmaceuticals in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, and later for the United States Department of Agriculture in Ithaca, New York as a molecular biology researcher where he passed away of a heart attack at his desk at the age of 38 years old. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and gardening. His love of the outdoors led him to the field of science.  He would take long walks looking for signs of wildlife.  Though he was a scientist he was a strong believer of the Lord and studied the Bible reverently.  He attended the McKendree United Methodist Church in Candor, New York and the Owego Church of the Nazarene also in New York.  He is survived by his parents, Larry E. and Barbara E. Markel of Bellefonte and a brother, Ben Markel, of Greensboro, North Carolina.  There will be a public visitation held on Monday, March 6, 2017 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm, at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte.  Funeral services will be held at noon at the funeral home with Reverend Kelly Carner officiating from McKendree United Methodist Church in New York.  Burial will follow at Zion Union Cemetery, Walker Township. He enjoyed his visit last year viewing the elk in Benezette so in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Keystone Elk Country Alliance.
